17-Year-Old Girl Sells Her New-Born Baby For N500,000 In Onitsha

A 17-year-old girl has been nabbed after she sold her baby to a couple in Onitsha, Anambra State for N500,000. This was revealed by the Ondo State Police Command at the weekend. It was gathered that Tessy Obianua, 17 was convinced by Mrs. Chibuzor Okoye, a known child trafficker to sell the baby to Mr. and Mrs Sunday Kalu who were desperately in need of a baby because they were childless. Giving details of the story, the state commissioner of police, Mrs. Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison, while parading the suspects said, five persons were involved in the case.

Ibifuro-Harrison said it was Tessy’s father, Mr. Henry Obianu, who alerted the police. ‘‘Mr.Obianu who claimed his daughter, Tessy ran away with her pregnancy January last year, said she later re-appeared again without the baby or pregnancy in May,’’ the CP said.

Police investigation also revealed that Tessy was lured to Onitsha by her father’s neighbour, simply identified as Mr. Jude Azuka. The CP explained that his men arrested Okoye  who specializes in child trafficking later. “It was Okoye who sold the said baby girl to the couple in Onitsha at the sum of N500,000.

“She claimed to have given Jude the sum of N200,000 out of which Jude claimed to have bought clothes and shoes to Tessy and also gave her N30,000.’’ “Mrs. Chibuzor thereafter forced Tessy, to sign an undertaking that she would never come back for the baby.”
