The Igbosere Magistrate Court in Lagos was yesterday thrown in panic after a lawyer who has been identified only as ‘Chidi’ slumped and died while making a case for adjournment. PUNCH reports that Chidi died moments after he fainted before he could be taken to the hospital. According to sources, the lawyer arrived late for his case. His clients were arraigned for stealing meat and snail from the Southern Sun Hotel in Ikoyi, and so the lawyer asked that the magistrate, Mrs F. M. Dalley adjourn the case to April 14, explaining that he had been held-up in traffic.
“While pleading with the magistrate for a change in the adjourned date because it was not convenient for him, he started coughing uncontrollably and gasping for breath,” a police prosecutor at the court told PUNCH. Next, the lawyer yelled in Igbo, “My heart, my heart,”, and was rushed out of the court. “He was rushed downstairs by one of his clients, who tried to get a cab that would take him to a hospital. But he died before the cab arrived.”
The corpse has been deposited in a morgue.
