Residents of Koniyaw, in the Bekwai District of Ashanti, were thrown into a state of shock on Friday, following the beheading of a 25-year-old woman allegedly by her boyfriend. The woman, identified as Afia Betty was found dead in a pool of blood by her eight-year-old son in her room after she was reportedly murdered by her boyfriend who is known as Frenchman, an illegal gold miner.
The Ghanaian Times reports that the woman's body has been recovered by the police and deposited at the Bekwai Hospital mortuary. The matter is now under police investigation. Giving details about the incident, a resident told Ghanaian Times that there was a wake keeping for a native of the town, Kwame Kyere, in the evening of Friday. He said the atmosphere was heightened when “Ye wo krom” song was played which saw a lot of mourners, including Bettey dancing to the tune.
It is believed the heartless boyfriend killed the woman for attending a wake-keeping service and dancing with other people.
The source alleged that in the course of dancing, Frenchman was seen at about 10 p.m., pulling Bettey away but no one knew where he was taking her to. According to the source, at about 1 a.m. Betty’s son went to their house to sleep, and on entering the room, stepped into a pool of blood on the floor and alerted some elders.
When the elders arrived at the house, they realised Betty’s throat had been slashed, and a deep cut on her forehead, close to the left eye. There was also a cut on her right ear. But Frenchman, fair in complexion, the source indicated, was no where to be found, adding that “we believe he is hiding in one of the communities”.
The police, the source said, were informed and they went for the body, while a search has been mounted for the arrest of the suspect.
