Customs Boss, Hameed Ali, Orders Removal Of Illegal Checkpoints

All illegal Customs checkpoints across the country have been ordered removed by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd). The directive is contained in a circular issued and addressed to the acting deputy Comptroller-General of Customs (Enforcement, Inspection and Investigation), A.A. Dangaladima.

The circular, numbered CNS/ENF/ABJ/032/S.35, is sequel to the presidential directive on enabling and ease of doing business in Nigeria.

According to circular, an illegal checkpoint is one which is more than 40 kilometres away from the border.

“The 40 km radius applies only to the borders. Consequently, there should be no check-points with the ports.”

It clarified that the ever busy Lagos-Badagry-Seme road has only two legal checkpoints at Agbara and Gbaji while Information Patrols beyond that point must last less than or equal to 224 hours.

Zonal Coordinators, Comptrollers FOUs, CACs CIU and other units are expected to make sure the directive is executed and no flouting occurs.
