Nigeria Mourns As Former Attorney-General Of The Federation, Onagoruwa Dies At 80

Nigeria’s former attorney-general, Dr Olu Onagoruwa is dead. Onagoruwa, a known human rights activist, was said to have died in the early hours of Friday, July 21 at age 80. The former Attorney-General of the Federation under the military government between 1993 and 1994 was said to have suffered a stroke following the brutal killing of his son by the military.

Respected across Africa, Onagoruwa was part of those who drafted the Ethiopian constitution in 1994.

The lawyer reportedly studied at the University of London for his LL.B; LL.M and PhD degrees. He returned to Nigeria to attend the Law School.

Before becoming the Attorney-General of the Federation, he set up the Onagoruwa Chambers through which he championed the rights of citizens becoming a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 1993.

While confirming the incident, Chidi Odinkalu, a former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, said: “Olu Onagoruwa, patriot, thinker, activist before it became fashionable to be one, good man, SAN. #RIP”

On his party, Gbénró Adégbolá tweeted: “Dr Onagoruwa sadly never really got over the killing of his son, allegedly by Abacha. Had stroke soon after. I pray his soul finds rest.”
