Police Sack 3 SARS Officers Over Illegal Arrest And Extortion In Lagos (Photo)

Three policemen of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SAR, attached to Area ‘N’ Command Ijede-Ikorodu have been dismissed over illegal arrest and extortion. They are Inspector Okelue Nkemeonye, (with Force No 136005); Sgt. Braimoh Sunday (F/No. 355897) and Sgt. Yusuf Olukoga (F/No. 359928).
According to Abayomi Sogunle, assistant commissioner of police, in charge of the Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit, PCRRU, of the Nigeria Police Force, the affected former policemen faced an Orderly Room trial at the Zone Two Command Headquarters, Onikan-Yaba and were found guilty by the Adjudicating officer on two charges of offence against discipline as provided for in paragraphs C (ii) Corrupt Practices and E (iii) Discreditable Conduct of the First Schedule of Police Act and Regulations Cap. P19. Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
Sogunle said the PCRRU recieved a complaint on the police officers via WhatsApp number 0805 700 0003. The sender narrated how the three men stopped and hauled him into their vehicle while returning from a bank where he had lodged some money for his brother. He said the dismissed officers pointed a gun at him before asking what he was doing for a living, to which he replied he was a fresh graduate living with his brother.
“I pointed my brother’s shop to them”, he said, but the policemen refused to stop after realising he had just returned from the bank”.
The victim said he received an alert on his phone which showed the money he deposited  had been credited, a situation that kindled the interest of the policemen.
“They search my phone on seeing the alert” and that the policemen began to accuse him of
being a Yahoo Yahoo Boy (internet fraudster).
He claimed he was driven round the town from 9am when he was picked and was only regained his freedom at 6pm, after parting with N50, 000.00. The victim also claimed the dismissed policemen similarly extorted other people and appeared notorious for such vile act, as they were being hailed around town. He also claimed they used his account to receive money extorted from others and his Automated Teller Machine, ATM, card to withdraw their loot.
However, the Lagos Police Command said the disgraced ex-policemen were not genuine SAR operatives.
“Investigation also shows that the officers extorted a total sum of N200,000 from the young men who they tagged “Yahoo Yahoo Boys”, the money was force from them via N90,000 ATM withdrawal and N110,000 mobile bank money transfer to a third party account provided by the policemen. All the extorted N200,000 was recovered by the PCRRU.
The police urged residents to report corrupt policemen via telephone numbers 08057000001, 08057000002| SMS/Whatsapp: 08057000003| BBM: 58A2B5DE|Twitter: @policeNG_PCRRU| Facebook: www,facebook.com/Police PCRRU| Email: complaint@npf.gov.ng OR PolicePCRRU@gmail.com.
