National Assembly Is Deceiving Nigerians – APC Member

A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tunji Abayomi has berated the National Assembly for avoiding restructuring and instead, deciding to amend the Constitution. The legal practitioner, who stated this on Channel TV’s Sunrise Daily, said the President Muhammadu Buhari nationwide broadcast was very presidential.

Abayomi pointed out that the process of restructuring, however, remains impossible without the National Assembly.

“It is only the constitution that can change the nation and you can’t talk about it without the National Assembly.

“The National Assembly is to bring about the constitution that will restructure Nigeria because the National Assembly has the delegated power of the people of Nigeria by their votes.”

He opined that President Buhari is right from the constitutional and legal perspective to drop the issue of restructuring at the table of the National Assembly adding that the APC restructuring committee must have a document to present to the National Assembly.

“Ideas matter. Obviously, if they (restructuring committee) are going to go to the National Assembly, they will have to present something and convince the National Assembly.

“If you look at the National Assembly, it’s not even sure that they are only interested in amendments that will preserve their privileged position.

“For example, restructuring this nation may require that the National Assembly is abolished or is conscripted to only one chamber. All of that is outside the present thinking of the National Assembly.

According to Abayomi, Nigeria doesn’t have a structure; thus it doesn’t need to be restructured, adding that the country must be structured through its constitution.

While noting that it is the constitution that defines how the nation will be governed, Abayomi further stated that constitution amendment by the National Assembly is a waste of time and adventure because they are amending the constitution which is not peoples constitution.

“It is not government that gives a nation a constitution, it’s the constitution that gives a nation a government.

“Our constitution was given to us by a government contrary to every understanding of constitutional experts.

“It is not a content or constitution that validates it, it is the procedure of making a constitution.”The problem of Nigeria constitution is not the content, it’s the origin. A people give to themselves a constitution by a negotiation. They constitution that was given to us was forced on us

“The problem of Nigeria constitution is not the content, it’s the origin. A people give to themselves a constitution by a negotiation. They constitution that was given to us was forced on us as a decree.”
