A Level 300 student of Biology in the Faculty of Education at Kano State University of Science and Technology (KUST) in Wudil, identified as Farouk Abubakar, has drowned at the river while swimming with colleagues.

The shocking incident occurred on Wednesday evening when three students of the university went for a swim at Wudil River and got drowned. Two of the students were rescued while the third drowned.

While speaking to a correspondent, an eyewitness to the incident, Yusuf Ibrahim, said: “Three students went for swimming and got sunk. Two of them managed to survive while the other one, Farouk Abubakar, drowned.”

Yusuf said following the death of the student, his colleagues went on the rampage vandalising the school property.

Speaking on the situation, the University Deputy Head of Information, Protocol and Public Relations Units, Abdullahi Datti Abdullahi, confirmed the protest by the students.

However, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Shehu Alhaji, appealed for calm when he visited the river to supervise the recovery of the body, and declared Thursday, May 3 and Friday, May 4 lecture-free days in honour of the deceased student.

He added that the mid semester break is extended to two weeks and asked students to vacate the school premises.
